Plumbers Below the Fold
Plumbers “below the fold” refers to those listings on page one of Google. There are 10 listings on each Google results page. The first 6 listings are visible when your browser opens to show the results page . “Below the fold.” refer to where scroll down to see listings 7 through 10. This is true for desk tops and laptops. Mobile phones with smaller screens may only show the top three listings. We will address that another time.
The term “above the fold” comes from newspaper jargon. You see everything above the fold including the headline and top stories . Finally, you have to unfold the paper to see the second half of the first page. Newspapers position the top stories “above the fold” to entice readers. Most readers starts reading the front page of the newspaper above the fold.
Your internet browser shows the top half of the page when it opens. This view is called “above the fold” in the computer world. That’s what you see when the results page opens for a “plumber” search. It may show a few ads and then it shows the #1 listing and the next 5 listings below it. Consequently, a plumber positioned below the fold has little chance of getting any attention or phone calls.
Google’s Page One Stats
When your plumbing company is ranked #7 through #10 on page one of Google you are “below the fold.” You’ll get less than 4% of the calls from ready-to-buy plumbing customers searching for a “plumber” in your town. Most SEO companies promise to get you on page one. That’s because it’s easy to land on the bottom of page one compared to being #1. As a result, you don’t get much of an ROI unless you are at least #3 on page one. So, #3 gets about 12%, #2 gets about 20% and #1 gets over 50% of the phone calls from ready-to-buy customers.
